The 2020 pandemic accelerated digital transformation for all sectors – but none more acutely than healthcare. Security leaders and teams were thrust into rapidly changing infrastructures and attack surfaces amid a triage of infected patients.
Accelerated remote work and telemedicine were forced elements of the transformational changes of the past year – but they are only just getting started. So what’s next? When we consider all the applications that now touch healthcare data, the next normal will be how we not only protect our own networks, but also all the new risks we face outside our normal scope.
We discussed the potential impacts this will have on your cyber strategy and the ways we should start preparing to defend against them.
Getting a people working collaboratively in a secure manner while abiding by HIPAA compliancy rules was among the biggest challenges. Threats such as ransomware requires significant staff education to combat. While executives may trust vendors and partners are following security practices, IT security teams can’t afford that trust. It is imperative before introducing new devices that may interact with the network in any way go through thorough risk assessment.
The volume of solutions demanded from the get-go of the pandemic was unprecedented. Allowing staff to work from home and providing virtual clinics was resolved by using third party security companies. But becoming virtual overnight was their biggest challenge.
While they may have been ready from a technology standpoint, the workforce wasn’t. They had to adopt new tech and learn to use them in new ways in a short period of time. The many changes and the speed at which they occurred necessitated getting to an executive decision of acceptable level of risk.

A lot of other conferences I’ve gone to are driven off a podium, someone presenting me a solution before they understand my problem. Here I have an opportunity to talk to my peers and learn from them.
I’m not part of some enormous crowd out there. I’m getting lot of interaction, hearing from people, their own personal stories. Individual examples of how people are leveraging their CX skills in their industry, in their business, in the work that they do everyday.
Very intimate, Very one-on-one! You are able to really get a lot of candid responses, so we’re getting a ton of value from that and a lot of valuable insights.
